Description
This is a picture that I took of a DC-3C at sunrise. My Dad was an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force for 22 years and since his retirement in 1998, he's worked as the main mechanic at a county airport in Kentucky. As I was out taking pictures at o'dark thirty in the morning, I was able to talk with my Dad about this particular plane and he made me start thinking about things I hadn't really considered before. As I stood watching the sun rise on this very cool plane, my Dad stood next to me waxing philosophical about how he likes to imagine all the different people who have worked on this plane over the years and about the amazing women who most likely built this plane. That got me to thinking about this particular plane and it's probable history which led me to doing some research. I discovered that DC-3C's, as opposed to the straight DC-3, was the designator given to the former C-47 military planes that were later sold for commercial use. I also discovered that this plane was likely built in the early 1940's although the FAA doesn't give an exact manufacturing date based on it's tail number, N4550J. Given that information, it is extremely likely that this plane was built by the very women that kept the American industry going in the 1940's, women who were commonly referred to as "Rosie the Riveter". Being the WWII history lover that I am, I find that I love this plane and the history that it's been a part of, more than I would have imagined I could. I went to the airport that morning to "capture a nice shot", but I ended up with so much more than that. I ended up with a nice Father Daughter conversation, quality time spent with my Dad, and a real appreciation for our cultural heritage and our American history. I realized that we're surrounded by it everywhere, but most of us are too busy rushing from one thing to the next to stop and appreciate what we're really seeing and experiencing. My hope is that those who "discover" this picture, will also discover a new appreciation for our past and how it has served us.
